Play by Eugeny Grishkovets with the assistance of Anna Matison
THE HOUSE
Listen, your own hose is something… I can not realize it so far, but deep in my heart I am sure that it is a right thing to own a house. I am even sure that I need it. At last I have a clear purpose…The purpose, which makes the whole life to serve it. My life has been purposeless for so long… |

The hero of the play, a successful physician with quite a profitable private practice, wants to buy a house. He asks his dearest friends, mostly well-to-do businessmen, to lend him a considerable sum of money for buying real estate. An unpredictable response of the hero’s friends knocks him down… Outwardly realistic plot from everyday life assumes multilevel interpretation. The theme of universal values, which as a rule are incompatible with material values, is revealed in rather delicate and non-obvious manner. A good ear can hear Chekhov’s motifs, finely and ironically interwoven with Eugeny Grishkovets’s marvelous and the most actual contemporary language. An unusual configuration of the venue gives spectators a chance to feel themselves in the center of events. The actors are dispersed over the auditorium as if involving audience into action. A movie in the final of the play, shot by the master of Russian cinema Serguei Soloviev, leaves the principle problem – whether it is possible to combine the material world with its savage customs and the subtle aspirations of a human sole – unsolved.
