Iosif Raykhelgauz: In this play by Semeon Zlotnikov I have discovered a new qualitative type of dramaturgy: the text can by no means be read word for word, and the characters like many live human-beings are inconsistent in what they are saying and doing: they pronounce certain phrases meaning absolutely different things, their feelings do not correspond their actions. 20 years ago together with the outstanding Russian actors Lubov Polischuk and Albert Filozov we opened «School of Modern Drama» with this very play. For many years a part of a Woman was magnificently performed by Irina Alferova. Came a Man to a Woman was a hit of all theatre’s tours and conquered many cities and towns in Russia and abroad, from Belgorod and Tallinn to Jerusalem and Sidney. After 500 (!) shows we said «farewell» to the performance, but not to the play. A young set designer Alexey Tregubov suggested an artistic vision of a set which inspired me to a new interpretation of Zlotnikov’s play. As a result I have introduced new characters, musicians and ballet-dancers. I am happy to have in our cast a unique actor Viktor Verzhbitsky. I follow with great interest the performance of unpredictable Amalia Mordvinova. Hope, thanks to their talent I will be able to slow down the time and prolong youth for our theatre and me personally. To say frankly, this play IS our youth…
